If your cat or dog becomes infested with fleas you can have a nasty problem on your hands; for both you and your pet(s). Not only are fleas tough to get rid of once they’ve invaded your home but they can cause flea bite dermatitis in your pet as well as a tapeworm infestation. The best way to get rid of fleas is to not get them in the first place!a
There are many types of flea control products on the market, with Advantage being one of the most widely purchased. Advantage ampules come in both ‘cat’ and ‘dog’ and are applied every 30 days for maximum flea prevention. You can purchase Advantage ampules from your veterinarian in single doses, 3 packs and 6 packs. Most vets recommend using Advantage at least seasonally, but, as our weather patterns change, many feel that your pet will benefit from year round treatment.
To apply Advantage flea control, part the hair on the back of your pet’s neck, near the shoulder blades, and squeeze the contents of the ampule onto the skin. Avoid bathing your pet for at least 24 hours after application of the product. Advantage flea side effects include irritation at the application site, lethargy and loss of appetite, though, it should be noted, behavioral side effects have been found in less than 1% of pets. If your pet ingests the product, Advantage flea side effects can include drooling, panting and weakness. Advantage is not safe for ingestion nor is it safe for the eyes. Using the product correctly, and storing it where your pet cannot reach it, will lessen the chance of any side effects occurring.
Pets that are over 7 weeks of age, not pregnant, sick or underweight can use Advantage safely. Flea preventative can only benefit your pet(s) and your household and these benefits far outweigh the minimal risk associated with the product. Compared to the products you will need to use to rid your pet and home of fleas, Advantage is more cost-effective, less messy and nearly odorless.
Protect your pet(s) from fleas this season; they’ll thank you for it!
